The tradition of the "Home Church" calls us to establish a dedicated prayer corner for our daily meditation, prayer and reading. This should be a quiet place where we can gaze upon the icons of our Lord and His saints and keep our Bible and prayer books handy. Along with icons of our Lord Jesus Christ and his mother the Holy Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary, many people also include icons of their family patron saints or saints whose lives are particularly inspiring to them on a personal level.
Candili is the Greek word for the vigil lamp which is a simple oil lamp with a wick. Olive oil burns best and we put a very small amount of water in the bottom of the lamp beneath the oil then it is is safe to leave the lamp burning at all times. Using a cork floater, the wick is suspended in the oil. The wick could be either a cotton cord or small wax nub called a "fitilaki". The lamp reminds us that Christ is the Light of the World and also calls us to push back Darkness through vigilance in prayer, attentiveness, good works, fasting and faith. This daily vigilence also calls us to remember to trim our wick and be sure not to run out of oil.
The Wood Prayer Shelf with decorative cross motif and vine design, also has a carved out place-holder for vigil lamp and grooves for leaning small icons. The Bottom shelf fits a Bible and other books and supplies.
